Black Friday Prep Starts With the Products You Add Now

September is when many Shopify merchants start building the products, bundles and seasonal ranges they hope will carry them through Black Friday and Christmas.

Last year, Shopify merchants generated a record $14.6 billion in Black Friday Cyber Monday sales, up 27% on 2024. More than 94,900 merchants had their highest-selling day ever.

There is plenty of attention on discounts, ads and landing pages.

A more mundane detail can still cost money: putting a new product into the wrong shipping profile.

Shopify adds new products to the general shipping profile by default unless they are assigned elsewhere. If you use custom profiles for bulky, fragile, premium or unusually expensive-to-ship products, somebody has to make sure every relevant product ends up in the right place.

That gets easier to miss when a catalogue is changing quickly.

Shipping Profiles Automator was built for exactly that job.

Set the rule once

The app lets merchants create rules using information already attached to products, including tags, vendor, product type and words in the title.

A furniture retailer might send products tagged oversized to its bulky-item profile. A merchant with several suppliers could assign one vendor’s products to a dedicated shipping profile. Fragile products could be routed separately.

When a matching product is created or updated, Shipping Profiles Automator assigns it to the appropriate profile automatically. The app also performs an automatic daily run to monitor products.

That removes one small manual job from every product launch.

More importantly, it reduces the chance that a customer reaches checkout with a product sitting under shipping rules that were never intended for it.

Shopify’s own guidance confirms that products outside a custom profile use the general shipping rates.

Useful automation should be boring

Shipping-profile administration is unlikely to be the most exciting part of anyone’s Black Friday plan.

That is a good reason to automate it.

The rules are predictable. The task is repetitive. The commercial consequence of getting it wrong can be an undercharged delivery, an unattractive checkout rate or more manual work at exactly the point when the store is busiest.

Shipping Profiles Automator costs $4.95 a month, includes automated product assignment and currently offers a seven-day free trial.

If you are adding seasonal products now, set the shipping logic while the catalogue is still manageable.

Install Shipping Profiles Automator and let the rules handle the next product automatically.
